Adoption and Foster CareStray cats are trapped and brought in to an isolated holding cage. A veterinary visit is scheduled and the cat is evaluated as to age and general health. Rabies and distemper Immunization are administered and blood test for Feline HIV (FIV) and Feline Leukemia (FelV) are performed. If the cat has not been altered, the cat is scheduled for spay or neuter. After a period of isolation from other cats (determined in consultation with the veterinarian) the cat is ready to go to a temporary foster home. The cat receives love, attention, good food and learns to trust humans. During this time the cat is evaluated as to temperament and social needs so that an appropriate adoption placement can be made. MikeyA very special cat: this is Mikey. He is a beautiful neutered male tabby about one year old with very special needs. He was hit by a car and found by an employee at Graymoor in Garrison NY who brought him to Putnam Felines. Mikey was just 8 months old and was believed to have been abandoned and living with a feral colony on the Graymoor grounds. His left front leg was hanging limp and he dragged it as he walked and ran. An examination under anesthesia by our vet revealed injuries too vast to repair. Mikey's leg had to be removed and he would never be able to return to his former life outside with his friends. Because he is young and there is a quality about Mikey that we had seen before in "abandoned not feral" cats, we brought him into foster care. He is responding very nicely and eating treats from my hand. The next step for Mikey is a new family who will take over where we leave off. They will continue to care for him and form a bond of trust. When he is ready for surgery (in about three weeks) Putnam Felines will pay for all surgical expenses. The family that adopts Mikey will have saved an innocent and very beautiful life. In return they will receive love from a place deep in the nature of this animal that had lived between the world of wild creatures and the uncomfortable, yet familiar world of the humans who had abandoned him. Spat is a 10 year old beige and black Calico cat . She is affectionate and begins to purr as soon as you look at her. She loves to be patted and is grateful for the warm bed and good food provided by her foster mom. Spat lived in a home with three other cats for 10 years until the owner became ill and was hospitalized. No family or friends stepped forward to take these cats and they were left in the hands of the rental agent in charge of the apartment where they lived. The rental agent put the cats out in the cold to fend for themselves. They were starving when a Good Samaritan called Putnam Felines to rescue them. Meet one of our newest cats, Tony Toes. Tony is a lovely black and white domestic short hair cat with beautiful eyes and markings, about one year old. Tony is a Hemingway Polydactyl, which means that he has an extra toe on each front foot which gives his feet the appearance of wearing mittens. Tony was a stray cat and he is friendly; he will roll right over to get a tummy rub from you. He loves to play, and will do fine in a home with other cats. Simpson is a sweet, very active 11 month old neutered male boy who loves to play. He lost most of his tail because of an accident but is adorable when he swishes it back and forth in play. A lovable little guy who plays hard and then collapses in your lap or at your feet for patting and attention. He is neutered, immunized, healthy and microchipped. The adoption fee is $95.
